PJ Jones Rolls To Victory In Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nev. (November 8, 2013) – The final race of the 2013 Inaugural Season of SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks would see the high-powered formula off-road vehicles tackle the temporary constructed asphalt course at Caesars Palace under the lights of Las Vegas, just steps away from the famous Las Vegas strip.

The day would begin with SST’s taking to the track for morning and afternoon practice sessions, before clocking a best of 2-laps qualifying run. Keegan Kincaid of Crandon, Wisc., driving the Traxxas sponsored No. 47 for Mike Jenkins laid down the quickest lap with a 23.436. Robby Gordon would qualify in the second position with a 23.558, and Jerrett Brooks qualifying third with a 24.043.

Friday night’s SST final would see P.J. Jones and Rob MacCachren pace the 30-lap SST final to green. The races original start would be called back as Arie Luyendyk Jr. would charge into Scotty Steele’s truck in turn 2, as the trucks became lodged together the red flag came out. After a complete restart Jones would lead lap-1 followed by MacCachren and Brooks.

The next 5 laps the top three would remain the same as Jones extented his lead to nearly four truck lengths ahead of MacCachren. On Lap-8, Brooks would miss his mark in turn 2 allowing Gordon to slip by into the third position.

On Lap-15 mechanical failure would strike multiple trucks, including championship points leader MacCachren would slow on the front stretch ending his run in the second position. At nearly the same time, Gordon and Sheldon Creed would also encounter mechanical woes.

Creed would retire the No. 74 Magnaflow entry early while MacCachren and Gordon would return to the race for valuable championship points.

Restarting in the fifth position Gordon did not waste any time moving back into the top 3. The front runners would consist of Jones, Brooks, and Gordon for the next 7 laps until Brooks would encounter a mechanical issue allowing Gordon to overtake the second position. Brooks would lose several positions before eventually dropping out of competition, allowing youngster Scotty Steele to move into the podium contention.

In hot pursuit of Jones for the remaining circuits Gordon’s quest for his fourth win of 2013 would evaporate as Jones, would go on to capture his first ever SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks win. Gordon would cross the finish line in second while Steele would earn his first SST podium finish.

With MacCachren encountering mechanical issues late in the SST final, Gordon would go on to clinch the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks inaugural season points championship by just 7 points.

SST On The Strip At Caesars Palace

Charlotte, N.C. (October 18, 2013) – Caesars Palace Las Vegas has hosted some of the greatest entertainment acts in the world – from Evel Knievel, to Frank Sinatra and Celine Dion, to the Formula One World Championship events in 1981 and 1982. On Thursday, November 7, 2013, taking part simultaneously with the automotive industry’s premier trade show, SEMA, Las Vegas history will once again be made as the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks™ event (SST) makes its way to Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip.

Due to overwhelming interest, and to best accommodate the race teams and fans, Caesars Palace executives and SST officials have changed the date from the previously scheduled Thursday, November 7th, to Friday, November 8th.

The race track for this special one-day only event will be constructed in front of Caesars Palace. High-flying SST trucks will propel past The Colosseum and through the Caesars Palace marquee. Fans will be thoroughly entertained as the high horse-powered SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks battle door-to-door, drifting around the seven-turn asphalt racecourse and flying over specially constructed metal ramps. This event is open to the public. An event at Caesars has long been a vision of series President, Robby Gordon. The unique form of racing that SST offers was immensely popular more than 20 years ago – known then as the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Championship – and fittingly Gordon, one of the world’s greatest off-road racers, has brought it back to life.

“Bringing SST to Caesars during SEMA Show week, the world’s most premier automotive specialty products trade event,is something unheard of,” said Gordon. “We would like to thank everyone at Caesars Palace and The Forum Shops at Caesars for giving us the opportunity to present a race like this. Getting to race SST trucks on this property is something phenomenal.”

“Through the years Caesars Palace has always set the standard and continually raised the bar on the Las Vegas Strip,” said Caesars Palace Regional President Gary Selesner. “An event like this is special because it pays homage to the historical attention-grabbing events that Caesars Palace is known for – like Evel Knievel and the Formula One races, yet also brings forth a new element of exciting entertainment for our guests. We are thrilled to welcome SST with this monumental event and encourage locals and race fans alike to join in on the action.”

In addition to the SST lineup, USA Pro SuperMoto and Modified Trophy Karts will be competing with a full program of qualifying and main events.

Saturday night’s final would see a six-car invert and for the second night in a row Mike Jenkins of Plano, Texas, would pace the 15-lap SST final to green. Apdaly Lopez would race out to the early lead before Jenkins would enter the second turn too fast resulting in a complete roll over.

Lopez would lead the first three laps, before fourth starting Justin Lofton would take over the lead entering the dirt stadium portion of the racecourse. Lopez would get loose coming to the start/finish line loosing a tremendous amount of ground to the sixth starting Robby Gordon.

SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks To Compete At Sand Sports Super Show

Orange County, Calif. (August 8, 2013) – SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks and Sand Sports Super Show have combined forces for Rounds No. 11, 12, and 13 of SST® racing, taking place at OC Fair & Event Center on September 20th – 22nd.

For the last fifteen years, hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of attendees have assembled at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif., to catch a glimpse of the new designs and products for the next model year. However in 2013, the largest and most exciting Sand Sports Super Show in the world just got more SPEED as the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks (SST) join the roster of weekend events.

The 600-horsepower Traxxas trucks will headline each day of the Sand Sports Super Show as well as other off-road and dune classes.

It has been a vision of Robby Gordon to redevelop and continue this unique and exciting form of off-road racing that was immensely popular more than 20 years ago – known then as the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Championship – and now it will be returning back to the OC September 20th – 22nd.

“The Sand Sports Super Show has built a name and reputation over the years as the place to be for manufacturers and industry leaders of sand buggies, pre-runners, off-road trucks, Side x Sides, toy haulers and accessories to display new product lines and innovations,” said SST President, Robby Gordon. “There has been no entertainment offered for exhibitors and show attendees to enjoy after the show was over, so it is only fitting to showcase a wild night of SST racing at the Sand Sports Super Show.”

In addition to three nights of SST qualifying rounds and SST main events, the program schedule will also entertain the Sand and Off-Road enthusiast with various other off-road divisions competing throughout the weekend.

Flight Friday’s program will include a Pre-Runner Jump Contest, 1400 truck races, along with Trophy Karts and SST.

Side x Side Saturday will see stock OEM 1000cc and under Side x Side races, along with a full event from the USA-Pro SuperMoto bikes, Trophy Karts and SST.

Sand Buggy Sunday will feature Sand Buggy racing, along with stock OEM 1000cc and under Side x Side racing, Trophy Karts and SST.

Since debuting April 6th at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., SST has run eight points races in two countries (USA and Canada). Five previous rounds were held in stadiums like the famed Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif. and the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo., all on courses built specifically for the SST’s performance on asphalt and dirt.

SST joined IndyCar at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in April and most recently held two events at the Honda Indy Toronto. Upcoming rounds No. 9 and 10 will take place over Labor Day weekend in Crandon, Wis. as part of the World Championships® of off-road racing, and now the addition of Rounds No. 11, 12, 13 to the 15th Annual Sand Sports Super Show in the OC.

Eight rounds of competition have produced four different main event winners. Championship points leader, Rob MacCachren leads the way with three wins while Justin Lofton and Robby Gordon are both tied with two wins each, and 15-year old Sheldon Creed capturing one victory.

Rob MacCachren & Jerrett Brooks Win At Crandon

Crandon, Wisc. (September 1, 2013) – Making the highly anticipated return to the World Championships, the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks invaded the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway in Crandon, Wis., for rounds No. 9 and 10 of SST competition. 10 SST drivers would take to the track including the new drivers of Craig Potts, Brock Heger and Scotty Steele.

On Friday evenings Round No. 9, Rob MacCachren, of Las Vegas, Nev., driving the No. 21 Traxxas truck, would make a late race pass en route to capturing his fourth SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks win of the season.

The 12-Lap SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks final began from a land rush start and saw Robby Gordon of Orange, Calif., grab the holeshot ahead of Scottsdale, Ariz., native P.J. Jones.

The Red flag was quickly displayed as Scotty Steele of Peoria, Ariz, lost the handle on his truck and made hard contact with a concrete retaining block causing extensive damage to his truck and ending his SST debut early. On the restart MacCachren would be the truck on the move as he moved past Justin Lofton into the second position setting his sights on the leader Gordon.

The battle for the lead would heat up in the laps following as Gordon did all he could to hold off the hard charging MacCachren. Following Gordon for multiple laps, MacCachren made his move on Gordon going up the hill and never looked back as he went on to take the Traxxas sponsored entry to the Round No. 9 victory ahead of Gordon and Jerrett Brooks.

 After the race, an excited MacCachren commented on winning Stadium SUPER Trucks Round No.9;

“Crandon SST Round No.9, driving the No. 21 Traxxas truck. I had a lot of fun out there. Practice did not go very well for us as we ended up seizing up a power steering pulley and I only was able to make 2 laps of practice. I did not know what to expect, and I needed to get out there and learn the track. Fortunately I was able to follow, watch, learn and finally set sail there and get by Robby (Gordon) with the momentum going over the big jump. After that, I just needed to settle in and make no mistakes. These trucks are fun to drive, as they are very difficult to drive. Going out there and being successful is a huge accomplishment to me. The SST series is good we are leading the points, and we need to keep having consistent good finishes.”

Sunday afternoon’s Round No. 10 SST finale of the 2013 World Championships would become a history-making event for the ages.

As the 10 SST trucks would begin from the Crandon famous land rush start, youngster Jerrett Brooks would capture the holeshot ahead of P.J. Jones. Point contender Robby Gordon would find trouble on the opening lap spinning around the SPEED Energy / Toyo Tires entry. Brooks would go on to lead the next four laps with close friend and classmate Sheldon Creed directly behind him. Creed would use the knowledge of following Brooks to his advantage at the conclusion of Lap-6.

Caution would fly at the halfway point and something new to SST would be performed. The trucks would race on the course in reverse the last 6-Laps. The epic battle between Creed and Brooks continued right where it left off before the caution flag, as Creed would jump out to the early lead with Brooks directly in tow. Creed would make a costly mistake on Lap-8 and Brooks capitalize racing by him back into the lead.

The man on the move, however, was Gordon, racing past points leader Rob MacCachren and P.J. Jones to overtake the third position. P.J. Jones great run would come to an end, after making hard contact with the inside concrete barrier causing extensive front end damage to his American Racing Wheels truck. Jones continued to drive his beaten and battered truck around the track, collecting as many valuable points as possible. The battered Jones truck eventually would stall at the exit of the track, where a few moments later Justin Lofton driving the J6 Ink entry would meet him for a brief discussion.

Brooks would go to lead the remaining 4-Laps to take the No. 77 Synergy Electric truck to the Round No.10 victory over of Creed and Gordon. Brooks would be marked down in history as the second victory for a teenager in SST competition.

 After the race an extremely excited Jerrett Brooks commented on his first ever SST win;

“I came out and got my first holeshot in my only my second time racing this track, Sheldon gave me a tremendous battle the first half of the race, and we came to the second half where we ran the track backwards. I got a good pass on Sheldon right away, and just started hitting my lines lap after lap trying to stay on the cushion as much as possible, extending my lead on Sheldon little by little. He gained a little on me on the last lap, but the No. 77 Synergy Electric Truck came out with the win.”
