Toyo Tires Sweeps Podium

Toyo Tires® Sweeps Podium at Inaugural Stadium SUPER Trucks™ Race in Phoenix

Glendale, AZ – Stadium-style off-road racing has made its exciting return in the U.S. this past weekend at the inaugural Stadium SUPER Trucks™ (SST) race held at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.  Toyo Tires® celebrated a podium sweep during the 18-lap final — the top three trucks riding on Toyo® Open Country M/T®-R tires.  The #21 Traxxas entry scored a decisive first place victory over the #8 SPEED Energy truck piloted by Justin Matney, followed by Robby Gordon in third driving the #7 SPEED Energy/MAPEI race truck.

The Toyo Open Country M/T-R has a history of winning championships in both desert and short-course off-road racing. Toyo Tires scored an off-road racing Trifecta in 2012 winning the SCORE, Best in the Desert and LOORS Pro 4 series championships.  The Stadium SUPER Trucks series adds another dimension for proving its winning capabilities off-the-road.

“Toyo Tires was proud to be a part of Robby Gordon’s Stadium SUPER Truck race in Phoenix this past weekend,” said Amy Coleman, senior director of marketing, Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp.  “Sweeping the podium of the first-ever SST race is especially gratifying since the SST spec trucks are evenly matched, making the drivers and the tires the biggest factors in the race results.”

“Race one is in the books and it was pretty gnarly.  Congratulations to everybody at Toyo… they podiumed the whole thing across the board,” said Robby Gordon. “I’m really happy, and I think the weekend went pretty good.  I think it was good competition for everybody involved, and I’m looking forward to the next event at Long Beach Grand Prix.”

The next event in the series will be at the Long Beach Grand Prix in Long Beach, California.  The trucks will demonstrate their skills on a paved grand prix course with manmade ramps to provide an entirely new challenge to both trucks and drivers.

All 12 SST events in 2013 will be televised via tape delay on NBC networks, seven on NBC and five on NBC Sports. Check local listings for channels and times.

MacCachren Claims Inaugural Stadium SUPER Trucks Race at University of Phoenix Stadium

Glendale, Ariz. (April 6, 2013) – The Inaugural Stadium SUPER Trucks event at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. proved to be a rough and tumble one as drivers in four distinct divisions were tested with many unique obstacles throughout the high flying course. Rob MacCachren, Darren Migues, Eddie Tafoya, and Myles Cheek were able to overcome all challenges and mark their name in the record book as the first ever winners in Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD competition.

MacCachren, of Las Vegas, Nev., driving the #21 Traxxas truck held off a duo of SPEED Energy driver’s en route to taking home the first checkered flag in Stadium SUPER Trucks history.

The 18-lap Stadium SUPER Trucks final was led to green by Justin Matney of Bristol, Va. who jumped out to the early lead before being over taken by Mexican off-road standout Lalo Laguna. Racing out to a 3 truck lead ahead of Matney on Lap 2, Laguna lost the handle on his #17 Vist Mexico entry allowing it to make contact and get stuck on the outside water barrier. However, the man on the move was the #21 of MacCachren rocketing from the sixth position to third in just one lap.

Quick Qualifier Justin Lofton, of Brawley, Calif., found trouble with Mike Jenkins in the #47 Traxxas truck coming off the second double resulting in Lofton rolling over on his side. On the restart, MacCachren set his sights on leader Matney, and was able power his way past to take the lead on Lap 4.

Lofton, found trouble once again on Lap 10, as a fire erupted underneath the hood of the #6 Imperial Valley Full Plate truck. On the restart, MacCachren blasted off to a four truck lead ahead of Matney and Phoenix, Ariz. native P.J. Jones. The final laps became a shootout for second as no one could catch MacCachren. Jones gave everything he had to get past Matney in the final corners, resulting in him losing control of his truck and flipping over.

MacCachren, raced the #21 Traxxas truck to victory in convincing fashion ahead of Mattney and Orange, Calif. native Robby Gordon.

In the SUPER Buggy feature Tafoya, of Chino Hills, Calif., was able to overcome a broken left front suspension and a late race charge by Robb Harvey, of Glendora, Calif. to race his way to victory in the ultra quick paced Stadium Buggy final.

Adrian Cenni, of South Hampton, N.Y. paced the field to green jumping out to ever so brief lead before spinning in turn one and scattering buggies in all directions behind. Tafoya took benefit from the stalled Cenni machine working his way past and stretching out to an early lead. Larry Foddrill battled with Tafoya for multiple laps before getting into the water barriers losing multiple positions.

The race came down to a last-lap shootout as Harvey was able to catch the ill handling Tafoya machine. The two went side-by-side with multiple calls with Tafoya prevailing to take the checkered flag ahead of second place finisher Harvey and third place Rob Martensen.

Other winners included Darren Migues driving Bounty Hunter over Larry Swim’s SPEED Energy Bigfoot in the Monster Truck division; Myles Cheek, bested 16 competitors in the SUPER Trophy Kart division.

The Inaugural season of Stadium SUPER Trucks continues Saturday night, April 27, in Los Angeles, Calif. at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a full slate of Stadium SUPER Trucks, Monster Truck, SUPER Buggy, and SUPER Trophy Kart racing.

Charlotte, N.C. (March 20, 2013) – Famed Motocross and off-road champion Ricky Johnson will compete in the 2013 Inaugural Stadium SUPER Trucks Season and will drive in the No.5 JEGS.com truck for the first three races.

Gordon’s Stadium SUPER Truck Series is modeled after the late Mickey Thompson Off-Road Championship and will take off-road racing to several stadiums across the country. The first race for the series and for Johnson will take place April 6 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

“I’ve been waiting since 1995 when the Mickey Thompson Series went away to race and bang doors with the best in off-road racing. That dream is going to come true in Phoenix when I team up with JEGS High Performance and go after the Stadium SUPER Trucks Championship.”

Johnson is a seven-time AMA champion, winning races in stadiums that are familiar to the SST schedule. He also is a four-time short course champion, winning titles in 1998 and 2010 in Pro-2, along with 2011 and 2012 in Pro-4.

The vision they have for this series combined with their passion will certainly pay dividends for their partners and create real entertainment value for the fans. That’s a real win-win situation and JEGS is excited to be a part of it.”

Johnson also will drive the No.5 JEGS.com truck on April 21 at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Bach in Long Beach, Calif., and returning on April 27 to the site of his first stadium victory, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Gordon’s new series features specially engineered, 600-horsepower off-road trucks racing against each on grueling dirt tracks with a huge jumps, crossovers and tight corners. The 2013 season will be comprised of 11 action-packed events in stadium venues across North America plus one International event soon to be announced.

“I’m so stoked to have Ricky Johnson a part of our series”, said Robby Gordon, President of RGOR. “Back in the day Ricky would always be one class above me and we had a great battle last year in Crandon during the TORC Series race. To get him partnered up with JEGS and race in venues he used to on two-wheels to come back later and race on 4 is awesome. I look forward to continuing our rivalry in a stadium setting.”

“To have Traxxas commit to a multi-truck franchise in Stadium SUPER Trucks is awesome and an absolute honor,” stated Stadium SUPER Trucks President, Robby Gordon. “With Traxxas continued support of off-road racing, involvement in Stadium racing will be a direct correlation back to the consumer as the trucks competing on the track are modeled after the company’s wildly popular Traxxas Slash Radio Controlled truck.”

The presence of the world’s leading manufacturer of hobby-quality radio control vehicles will be known throughout the Ultimate OFF-ROAD Expo as they pull out all the stops for Traxxas Radio Control fun with products, contests, prizes, the Traxxas Girls, incredible, high-flying demonstrations at each of the Stadium SUPER Truck events throughout the season. The interactive Try-Me Track will give thousands of race fans the opportunity to take the wheel of a Traxxas Slash and put it through its paces on its very own off-road obstacle course.

Lincoln Electric Named Welding Supplier for SST

Charlotte, N.C. (February 22, 2013) – Team-owner and driver Robby Gordon launches his Stadium SUPER Trucks (SST) Series at the University of Phoenix Stadium on April 6. All trucks featured in the series are being built in Gordon’s shop using equipment from his longtime NASCAR and Off-Road partner, Lincoln Electric.

The SST series will kick off the NBC-televised season in April with a minimum of 12 events scheduled throughout the United States and potential international events. The SST vehicles are highly-modified trucks that are powered by 600-hp V-8 engines and racing on DOT-approved tires.

All of the trucks are fabricated in Robby Gordon’s SPEED Factory facility in Charlotte, N.C., with welding equipment supplied by Lincoln Electric. The company has been Gordon’s welding supplier for the past decade as Gordon competed in NASCAR, SCORE International (Baja) and Dakar Rally events. That relationship continues as Gordon transitions to series ownership.

“Lincoln Electric has been an integral part of keeping our NASCAR and Off-Road race cars together for years, and I’m excited to keep them as a partner as our welding needs have increase to thicker and larger materials,” Gordon says. “The guys in the shop have been putting the welders to the test using Lincoln’s SuperArc wire.”

Lincoln Electric equipment employed to produce the SSTs include Power MIG® 350MP push-pull MIG welders to weld aluminum brackets, as well as Power MIG® 256 MIG welders that target mild-steel joining. Precision TIG® 275 TIG welders join brackets and specialty parts. Lincoln Electric consumables used in the shop include SuperArc® L-56® MIG wire. Gordon’s fabricators also use Lincoln Electric Torchmate® cutting tables to produce a variety of truck parts.

This season, SST racers will have the opportunity to win a $60,000 purse each weekend—the top three finishers split the purse–and the overall series champion will be awarded a $500,000 prize at the end of season.
