SST SERIES TO RACE AT 2014 CHEVROLET DETROIT BELLE ISLE GRAND PRIX

SPEED ENERGY STADIUM SUPER TRUCKS SERIES TO RACE AT
2014 CHEVROLET DETROIT BELLE ISLE GRAND PRIX

DETROIT, Mich. (December 13, 2013) – Adding even more excitement and bringing an extreme element to the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, it was confirmed today that the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks (SST) Series will compete at next summer’s event, May 30-June 1, 2014.

In only its second season and coming off a wildly-popular debut in 2013, the SST Series will compete on the 2.3-mile Raceway at Belle Isle Park street circuit with two races run during Grand Prix weekend. The high-flying trucks will launch from a standing start for each race and they jump ramps that will be set up on the Grand Prix race circuit.

With trucks expected to reach speeds in excess of 120 mph, launching more than 15 feet in the air and covering distances more than 75 feet on Belle Isle, the SST Series is unique in the sense that all trucks are identically prepared and delivered to drivers in race-ready condition. Drivers do not have an advantage over others because they have a bigger budget or greater technology.  Drivers are assigned SST crew members who make minor adjustments at a driver’s request.  The rules are specific as to what changes are permitted on the trucks so that the technology in the trucks remains equal.

“All the fans at the Grand Prix are going to love watching the SST Series trucks in action,” said Bud Denker, Chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. ”These trucks can just fly and it will be incredible to watch them battle wheel-to-wheel on the streets of Belle Isle.”

In addition to the SST Series, the IndyCar Series, the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and the Pirelli World Challenge Series will also compete at Belle Isle in 2014. With two races run in SST, IndyCar and World Challenge competition, fans will have the opportunity to enjoy seven great races over the course of three days at Belle Isle.

“With the addition of the SST Series to an already action-packed racing lineup, next summer’s Grand Prix is going to provide the most exciting on-track competition that we’ve ever had on the island,” added Denker.

Founded by former IndyCar and NASCAR driver Robby Gordon, the 1995 Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix polesitter and race winner, the SST Series raced at the Long Beach and Toronto street circuits with the IndyCar Series this past season. In 2014, the series will feature 15 rounds of competition among 10 race venues, including the ESPN X Games in Austin, Tex.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to bring the SST Trucks to Detroit and race next season at the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix,” said Gordon, who is also a driver in the series. “We believe SST is the most extreme and exciting form of motorsports on four wheels in the world and we’re thrilled to be able to bring it to the fans in the Motor City.”

In addition to Gordon an off-road racer Rob McCachren, who finished second in the SST Series season championship, other popular drivers that raced in the series this year included Paul Tracy, Davey Hamilton, Justin Lofton, Kyle LeDuc, Arie Luyendyk Jr., P.J. Jones, Mike Jenkins and Ricky Johnson.

SST TO JOIN X GAMES AUSTIN IN 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (December 11, 2013) – Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks (SST) series has been selected by ESPN to join the complement of sports at the upcoming X Games Austin event, taking place in Texas on June 8, 2014 at Circuit of the Americas.

Influenced by the former Mickey Thompson Stadium Off-Road Racing Series, where drivers such as Gordon, Casey Mears and six-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson got their start, Gordon created SST in response to the public’s overwhelming interest in trucks and off-road racing. His plan to redevelop the former stadium series has led to exciting racing on both asphalt and dirt, while producing one of the most extreme forms of action motorsport today.

“We’re thrilled to have Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Truck Series join the complement of sports at X Games Austin,” said Tim Reed, senior director of content strategy. “We look forward to working with the Stadium Super Truck team, and showcasing to ESPN X Games audiences around the world a very entertaining form of truck racing.”

Other than the trucks launching more than 20 feet in the air covering distances more than 150 feet under race conditions, what sets the SST program apart from other series is the fact that all the SST trucks are identically prepared and delivered to drivers in race-ready condition. Races are decided by driver skill alone rather than individual team engineering and budgets. Drivers and their personal mechanics are assigned specific SST technicians who together tune and make minor adjustments to the 600-HP trucks.

“It is a great honor to have been chosen by ESPN to bring Stadium Super Trucks to the X Games,” Gordon said. “The X Games are the premier action-sport property in the world, and this is a testament to the fact that SST is the most extreme four-wheel motorsport on earth. Circuit of the Americas in Texas will be a great venue to showcase SST to the X Games audiences.”

The X Games will be one of 15 rounds currently scheduled for the 2014 SST season. Following the successful inaugural season of the Stadium Super Trucks, the 2014 SST schedule features 10 race venues, all within North America’s top-50 markets, including six venues within the top-15.

In 2013, the season championship came down to the last race, ending with a points difference from first to second of only seven points (a total of three points paying positions on track for the season). This is a testament to how competitive and equal the trucks really are. P.J. Jones won his first SST race at the season-ending event at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip. Other race winners in the first SST season included McCachren (4 wins), Gordon (3), Lofton (3), Sheldon Creed (2) and Jerrett Brooks (1). In 14 rounds of competition, 27 world-class drivers took part in the series, including popular drivers Paul Tracy, Davey Hamilton, Kyle LeDuc, Arie Luyendyk Jr., Jeff Ward, Mike Jenkins and Ricky Johnson.

2014 SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks Schedule

Charlotte, N.C. (November 27, 2013) – Following the successful inaugural season
of the SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks (SST), the 2014 SST schedule features
10 race venues, all within North America’s top-50 markets, including six venues
within the top-15.

Several of the events will feature two rounds of competition, bringing the total
number of rounds to 15 for the second season of the highly competitive and
high-flying Super Trucks.

Among the cities SST will visit include Las Vegas, Toronto, San Diego, Los
Angeles, Detroit, Indianapolis and Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla. One additional
city will be announced, which SST founder and president Robby Gordon, believes
will be the headline event of the 2014 season. Specific dates will be announced
in conjunction with promoters and other local partners. However, it can be
stated the season will start in Las Vegas on March 7 and end at the same venue
on Nov. 7.

For its second season, Gordon has focused the schedule around further-enhancing
sponsor value by racing in front of large crowds and establishing an enhanced
national television platform. The inaugural season’s schedule, which was
highlighted by the amazing trucks and drivers racing in conjunction with several
IndyCar Series races on iconic circuits, proved to be well-received by fans and
competitors alike.

“Having an opportunity to showcase these trucks last season at places like the
Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and the Honda Indy Toronto was tremendously
successful,” Gordon said. “Since then the outreach from promoters asking us to
bring the SST series to their venues has given us all a great sense of pride and
proves to us that we have a series that is exactly what it was designed to be –
the most unbelievable, jaw-dropping form of auto racing in the world.”

Other than the trucks launching more than 20 feet in the air covering distances
more than 150 feet, what makes the SST program such a success is the fact that
all the SST trucks are identically prepared and delivered to drivers in
race-ready condition. Drivers do not have an advantage over others because they
have a bigger budget or greater technology. Drivers are assigned SST crewmembers
who make minor adjustments at a driver’s request. The rules are specific as to
what changes are permitted on the trucks so that the technology in the trucks
remains equal.

In 2013, Gordon came from behind to edge world-class off-road racer Rob
McCachren by seven points to capture the season championship. NASCAR Truck
Series race-winner Justin Lofton finished third. P.J. Jones won his first SST
race at the season-ending event at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip, and
finished fourth in season-ending points. Other race winners in the first SST
season included Gordon (3 wins), McCachren (4), Lofton (3), Sheldon Creed (2)
and Jerrett Brooks (1).

Over 14 rounds of competition, 27 world-class drivers took part in the series,
including popular drivers Paul Tracy, Davey Hamilton, Kyle LeDuc, Arie Luyendyk
Jr., Mike Jenkins and Ricky Johnson.

Influenced by the former Mickey Thompson Stadium Off-Road Racing Series, where
driver’s such as Gordon, Casey Mears and six-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson
got their start, Gordon created SST to capitalize on the public’s overwhelming
interest in trucks and SUVs as well as the fact that the majority of automotive
aftermarket parts are marketed for trucks.

Tickets Now On Sale For SST On The Strip At Caesars Palace

Charlotte, N.C. (November 1, 2013) – Not since 1984 has a major motorsports event taken place within steps of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, but that changes Friday, November 8 when Caesars Palace Las Vegas hosts SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks on a temporary circuit which sends the trucks flying literally through the Caesars Palace Marquee.

Tickets are now on sale at the Caesars Palace SST Ticket Page. With fewer than 4,000 tickets available, SST officials strongly encourage fans to reserve tickets in advance. SST on the Strip at Caesars Palace takes place as the SEMA Show – the premier automotive specialty products trade event in the world – also held in Las Vegas concludes.

“This is an event that even by Las Vegas standards is beyond comparison,” SST founder and president Robby Gordon said. “Caesars Palace is known for first-class events and this may be the most amazing activity to take place in Caesars’ parking lot since Evel Knievel was jumping the fountains. We would like to again thank everyone at Caesars Palace and The Forum Shops at Caesars for giving us the opportunity to present a race like this.”

Practice and qualifying for Friday night’s race events will take place during the day on the temporary circuit that will be situated in front of Caesars Palace and adjacent to The Forum Shops. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the racing action, which will also include the USA Pro Supermoto and the Modified Trophy Karts, will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Only three points separate series leader Rob MacCachran and Gordon in the season-long points’ battle. MacCachran has won four of the 13 SST events while Gordon has taken three titles. Third-place driver Justin Lofton (three wins), Sheldon Creed (two wins) and Jarrett Brooks (one win) are the other drivers to have scored wins this season.

Throughout this inaugural season of the high horse-powered SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks, fans have watched door-to-door racing and incredible cornering as the trucks drifted around both asphalt and dirt racecourses flying over specially constructed metal ramps or huge dirt embankments.

An event at Caesars has long been a vision of Gordon’s. The unique form of racing that SST offers was immensely popular more than 20 years ago – known then as the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Championship – and fittingly Gordon, one of the world’s greatest off-road racers, has brought it back to life.

Robby Gordon Wins At Costa Mesa

Costa Mesa, Calif. (September 20, 2013) – On a brisk Southern California day, SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks invaded the opening day of the 2013 Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa, Calif., for a night of practice, qualifying, along with Trophy Kart, 1400 Truck and SST main events.

After multiple practice sessions, the Stadium SUPER Trucks took to the temporary track for the best of 2-lap qualifying session. Brawley, Calif., native, Justin Lofton, edged out Wisconsin native Keegan Kincaid by .005 to capture the quick time with a lap of 58.222.

After a six-car invert Mike Jenkins of Plano, Texas, would pace the 15-lap SST final to green. Craig Potts would race out to the early lead, but entering the second turn Potts would lose the handle on his No. 59 truck spinning and losing multiple positions.

Fourth starting Robby Gordon would waste no time getting to the front of the field racing back to the line first ahead of P.J. Jones and Lofton.

Jones would have a mechanical problem on Lap-2 losing position after position eventually dropping out on Lap-5.

Gordon and Lofton would remain the class of the field racing away after a Lap-7 caution. A hard charging Lofton would be glued to the bumper of the No. 7 corner after corner, but would lose his chance after striking a water barrier that Gordon bumped loose.

Gordon would go on to capture his third SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks win of the season; he was followed to the finish by second place Keegan Kincaid and third finishing Apdaly Lopez.

Second running Justin Lofton would encounter mechanical issues coming to the finish line dropping him to a fifth place finish.

SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Round No. 12 at the 2013 Sand Sports Super Show will begin at 6PM with SST qualifying, followed by 1400 truck heats. Trophy Kart qualifying, Stock and Modified Side x Side qualifying, SUPERMoto qualifying, followed by finals in all classes.

SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks To Compete At Sand Sports Super Show

Orange County, Calif. (August 8, 2013) – SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks and Sand Sports Super Show have combined forces for Rounds No. 11, 12, and 13 of SST® racing, taking place at OC Fair & Event Center on September 20th – 22nd.

For the last fifteen years, hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of attendees have assembled at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif., to catch a glimpse of the new designs and products for the next model year. However in 2013, the largest and most exciting Sand Sports Super Show in the world just got more SPEED as the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks (SST) join the roster of weekend events.

The 600-horsepower Traxxas trucks will headline each day of the Sand Sports Super Show as well as other off-road and dune classes.

It has been a vision of Robby Gordon to redevelop and continue this unique and exciting form of off-road racing that was immensely popular more than 20 years ago – known then as the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Championship – and now it will be returning back to the OC September 20th – 22nd.

“The Sand Sports Super Show has built a name and reputation over the years as the place to be for manufacturers and industry leaders of sand buggies, pre-runners, off-road trucks, Side x Sides, toy haulers and accessories to display new product lines and innovations,” said SST President, Robby Gordon. “There has been no entertainment offered for exhibitors and show attendees to enjoy after the show was over, so it is only fitting to showcase a wild night of SST racing at the Sand Sports Super Show.”

In addition to three nights of SST qualifying rounds and SST main events, the program schedule will also entertain the Sand and Off-Road enthusiast with various other off-road divisions competing throughout the weekend.

Flight Friday’s program will include a Pre-Runner Jump Contest, 1400 truck races, along with Trophy Karts and SST.

Side x Side Saturday will see stock OEM 1000cc and under Side x Side races, along with a full event from the USA-Pro SuperMoto bikes, Trophy Karts and SST.

Sand Buggy Sunday will feature Sand Buggy racing, along with stock OEM 1000cc and under Side x Side racing, Trophy Karts and SST.

Since debuting April 6th at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., SST has run eight points races in two countries (USA and Canada). Five previous rounds were held in stadiums like the famed Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif. and the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo., all on courses built specifically for the SST’s performance on asphalt and dirt.

SST joined IndyCar at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in April and most recently held two events at the Honda Indy Toronto. Upcoming rounds No. 9 and 10 will take place over Labor Day weekend in Crandon, Wis. as part of the World Championships® of off-road racing, and now the addition of Rounds No. 11, 12, 13 to the 15th Annual Sand Sports Super Show in the OC.

Eight rounds of competition have produced four different main event winners. Championship points leader, Rob MacCachren leads the way with three wins while Justin Lofton and Robby Gordon are both tied with two wins each, and 15-year old Sheldon Creed capturing one victory.

15 year-old Sheldon Creed Dominates Round No. 8 for First SST Victory

TORONTO (July 14, 2013) – Sheldon Creed, of Alpine, Calif., dominated the final six laps of the Honda Indy Toronto to capture his first ever SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks victory in convincing fashion.

As gorgeous weather conditions surrounded the Toronto area for the second day in a row, the encore presentation of SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks took to the temporary constructed street course of the Honda Indy Toronto for Round No. 8 of competition.

The starting line-up for the 8-lap SST Final would be determined by a complete invert of the fastest times from Saturday’s Round No. 7. After the inversion Toronto, native, Paul Tracy would find himself starting from the pole position to the inside of Scottsdale, Ariz., driver, P.J. Jones.

As the green flag flew, Tracy driving the No. 3 SportsNet truck would quickly jump out to the early lead but would relinquish it soon after to Jones in the American Racing Wheels truck. Third starting Creed would also move past Tracy and settle behind Jones setting up a fierce battle between the two.

Creed would maneuver past Jones on Lap-3 as the two navigated through the jump section of the 1.75-mile course. Falling in line behind Creed, Jones would constantly apply pressure bumping and banging into the back of the No. 74 Traxxas truck.

Heavy contact between the two trucks would send both drivers spinning out of control. With the tremendous lead on the field, both trucks would regain their position back in the running order. However, the No. 98 of Jones would acquire enough front-end damage in the contact resulting in fading back in the running order and eventually having to pit for repairs.

Justin Lofton of Brawley, Calif., would capitalize on the caution flag on Lap-4 as the Lofton Cattle No. 6 was on the move over taking the third spot from Tracy. Nothing could stop Creed, as he would pull back away from the field on cruise control.

Trouble would find the first place starter Tracy on Lap-6 as he made heavy contact with the wall, causing severe damage to the SportsNet truck ending his return to racing in front of the hometown fans.

Lap-7 trouble would strike third running Justin Lofton as he would encounter a loss of motor performance, resulting in the surrendering of multiple positions.

The No. 7 SPEED Energy truck driven by Robby Gordon would make his presence known on Lap-7 moving into the top-3, recovering from in an early race spin.

In convincing fashion Creed, would go on to secure his name in the record books as the youngest winner in SST history. Robby Gordon would cross the finish line a distant second while Davey Hamilton would grab his first podium finish rounding out the top-3.

After the race Creed commented on winning his first SST Victory:

“Getting my first SST win, I have been searching for this for awhile. Starting third I knew I needed to get away fast. It just wanted to run away from the pack, I did not want to get into the whole bumping and rubbing. I knew if I got in front of P.J. he was going to give it to me today, and he did. I looked in the mirror, and I was waiting for it, and he finally hit me we both ended up spinning out. P.J. and I were so checked out it ended up working out good. On the restart, he was right there again bumping me and pushing me all the way down the straightaway.”

“My strong part of the track was the jumps. It is where I could catch them every lap and just send those things. My weakest point was the back, so I knew if I was going to pass him it was going to have to be in front, and I made it happen!” Stated the young, Creed.

NBC Sports Network will broadcast SST Rounds No. 7 and 8 from the Honda Indy Toronto in the upcoming weeks. Exact date and time is yet to be determined.

The Inaugural season of SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks continues September 1, in Crandon, Wisc., at the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway with Round No. 9 to be part of the 44th Annual World Championship of Off-Road weekend.
