Stadium SUPER Trucks to Run Exhibition Race at Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 14, 2013) – Since 1975, America’s version of the Monaco Grand Prix – the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach – has seen legendary drivers in Formula 1, CART/Champ Car and IndyCar create some of the greatest moments in motorsports history.

On April 21, history will be made once again with an unprecedented road course demonstration race by Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD Stadium SUPER Trucks™, which will run just prior to Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series® main event.

It has been a long-time dream of Gordon’s to personally redevelop and bring back this unique form of off-road stadium racing that was immensely popular more than 20 years ago – known then as the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Championship.

“Long Beach is going to be insane,” said Gordon, a California native. “Imagine these 600 HP machines drifting around corners and hitting metal jumps, flying over 50 feet through the air on the famous road course that has seen icons like Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Jr. and many more. To run our Stadium SUPER Trucks Series here it’s truly a great thing for us as we get to bring even more fun and excitement to the Long Beach event and show racing fans what off-road trucks can really do on asphalt.”

Gordon, who himself competed regularly on the streets of Long Beach in the mid-1990s scored a Trans Am win as well as a podium finish for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach race in 1994. Gordon will be one of the many drivers who will race as well as become airborne (over specially constructed metal ramps) in the only event on the 2013 Stadium SUPER Trucks schedule slated to run on asphalt.

“We are excited to add Robby Gordon’s Stadium SUPER Trucks to our Sunday program,” said Jim Michaelian, president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. “This will bring a whole new dimension to the multitude of racing activities we have on our weekend program and the sights and sounds of those V-8 trucks going down Shoreline Drive should be awesome.”

Race fans will certainly get an eyeful as the Stadium SUPER Trucks go to battle, powered by 600-horsepower engines, going door-to-door on the 11-turn, 1.97-mile street course circuit for this special one-of-a-kind event.

The Grand Prix exhibition will serve as the build-up to the Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD Stadium SUPER Trucks event scheduled the following weekend (April 26-27) at the famed L.A. Memorial Coliseum. The series then moves to San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium on May 4 and May 18 for two thrilling venues to round out the commemorative California portion of the inaugural 2013 season.

Gordon’s new series, based in Charlotte, debuts April 6 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., with packed stadiums expected throughout a 12-race season. Other venues include Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Soldier Field in Chicago, Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, and the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Ticket prices for the Grand Prix range from $28 for a Friday General Admission ticket to $130 for a three-day ticket that includes Sat./Sun. reserved seating in grandstand upper levels. Pre-paid parking packages are also available, along with handicapped seating, IndyCar Paddock passes, Super Photo tickets and a wide variety of Hospitality Club packages. Fans can select and pay for their 2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach seats, parking and paddock passes online at gplb.com. Ticket orders can also be placed by calling the toll-free ticket hotline, (888) 82-SPEED.

SUPER Buggy Class added to Stadium SUPER Trucks Series

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 12, 2013) – Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD Stadium SUPER Trucks™ announced today the addition of the lightning-quick SUPER Buggy class to the Inaugural 2013 season. The SUPER Buggy is an off-road racing class similar to one of the popular Super 1600 Buggies that used to compete in Mickey Thompson’s Off-Road Racing Series more than 25 years ago.

The eagerly anticipated SUPER Buggy debuts April 6 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. and will also feature racing from BIGFOOT® Monster Trucks as well as the Stadium SUPER Trucks, the main feature of the series.

“The Super 1600 buggies is where a lot of successful racers started their careers,” said Series President, Robby Gordon. “It’s a really popular class, and I’m hoping our SUPER Buggies can launch some of these guys careers like it did for myself, Bob Gordon, Jerry Whelchel, Marty Coyne, Marty Hart, Marty Tripes, Bob Hannah, Frank Arciero Jr. and more. With our series showcased in the best venues across the country, there’s no other place where this class can race and get this type of exposure. Guys will race for $5,000 going to the winner with second place earning $2,500 and third getting $1,500, all while being televised on NBC. Adding another competitive class to SST will bring great drivers and teams that will make for exciting racing that fans will really enjoy.”

The new SUPER Buggy is an open-wheel buggy, very similar to the familiar Pro Buggy Unlimited class that features a motor with approximately 210 horsepower. With a maximum track width of 93” and only weighing a minimum of 1800lbs., this class is a stepping-stone for young guns and a playground for off-road veterans to showcase their skills in front of thousands of fans in first class stadiums.

Registration for the SUPER Buggy class will be available for participants to sign up for the 2013 Championship season soon at http://www.usacracing.org.

STADIUM SUPER TRUCKS CHASSIS #22 NEARS COMPLETION

Charlotte, N.C. (January 31) – Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD’s Stadium SUPER Trucks, which will begin its inaugural season of thrilling, stadium style off-road racing on April 6 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. announced this week that production of these one-of-a-kind race vehicles is ahead of schedule.

“We have been working long hours for months, and there will be 30 complete trucks ready to compete at Phoenix. The craftsmanship and build of the Stadium SUPER Truck is something we take enormous pride in at Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD,” said Shane Bourgeois, lead mechanic.

Bourgeois added that 22 chassis are through production at Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD’s state of the art, 100,000 square foot facility in Charlotte, NC. Each truck is being constructed to a design spec exclusive to Stadium SUPER Trucks.

“I’ve been thinking about Stadium SUPER Trucks for 20 years; it is a place where I started my career and I have always dreamed of bringing it back one day,” said Series President, Robby Gordon. “This is a platform for athletes from all types of sports that can come and be competitive. Being that all trucks are built the same, it comes down to the driver’s athletic ability to perform. We are confident in putting on a great race and quality entertainment for the fans. I cannot wait to start the season on April 6 at University of Phoenix Stadium.”

Designed to resemble a Traxxas remote control “Slash” truck, the Stadium SUPER Truck is the life size model of the popular RC version. Its unique specifications are something that has not been seen in off-road racing since the Mickey Thompson off-road era. Sitting on 35” DOT approved tires; the truck features a wheel-base of 104” with a stance only 71” wide. This two-wheel drive vehicle featuring a 2 or 3 speed transmission (pending track configuration) offers 18” of wheel travel in the front and 24” in the rear allowing the truck to soar over large jumps and land with authority. The 600 hp EFI V-8 powered trucks weigh 3000 lbs making the power to weight ratio of .20 compared to short-course’s Pro 2 that has 800 hp but weighs 4200 lbs with a power to weight ratio of .19. With the SST’s lower center of gravity, it’s an advantage over any Pro Lite, Pro 2, and Pro 4 in short course racing today.

“Doing what you love is most important and racing is my life, my passion,” said Luyendyk. “The thrill I get when I’m racing is indescribable. I’ve always wanted to be able to better share that experience with the fans.

“I think with this (fan) initiative, a part of everyone will be right there racing for the win with me,” he said. “We’ll be in it together as a team. Thank you in advance and I’ll see you at a Stadium Super Truck race this season!”
