SPEED Energy Formula Off-Road Announces 2015 Schedule

Stadium Super Trucks Schedule to Feature Events in Eight U.S. Markets, Australia and Canada

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (December 8, 2014) – SPEED Energy Formula Off-Road Presented by TRAXXAS announced today its 2015 schedule, which will feature a diverse and exciting mix of venues and track layouts including popular stadium venues, several prominent Verizon IndyCar Series races and prestigious international events.

“Developing such a strong schedule for next year allows us to continue to provide a platform for Stadium Super Trucks presented by TRAXXAS in major markets,” said Robby Gordon, owner. “Next season our trucks will race in front of enthusiastic crowds across the country, as well as in international markets. That will allow the series and our competitors to gain world-wide exposure.

“We’ve been invited to race at some of the most popular venues on the IndyCar circuit and we’re super pumped to be going back to stadiums where we will build the most amazing track configurations that will blow fans away.”

The season kicks off with a full field of SSTs on Feb. 27-March 1 in Adelaide, Australia, where the series will race with the V8 Supercars at the Clipsal 500 in front of an anticipated crowd of more than 250,000.

The TRAXXAS sponsored and inspired SST trucks will then travel to Florida to race during the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg (March 27-29), one of four IndyCar companion events in 2015. In addition, the series will be a part of the following IndyCar event weekends: the Grand Prix of Long Beach, California (April 17-19), the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans (May 29-31) and the Honda Indy Toronto (June 12-14).

The series’ 2015 schedule will also feature wildly popular stadium racing, which takes place in both Phoenix (May 8-9) and San Diego (May 15-16). Stand-alone urban off-road events will take place in Los Angeles (September/October) and Las Vegas (Nov. 4-5).

Details related to an event held in Texas on the weekend of June 5-7 will be announced separately.

All 10 races will again be broadcast on a major sports network in 2015, with the broadcast partner and specific air times and dates to be announced later.

“This schedule allows us to continue to bring off-road racing to the masses,” Gordon said. “We have built SST races to be great family events and these venues also allow our teams, drivers and sponsors to connect directly with some of the most enthusiastic sports fans in the world.”

Before the 2015 season kicks off in Adelaide, Australia, several of the SSTs will close out 2014 in Barbados as featured vehicles for 13 of the world’s top drivers in the annual end-of-season Race of Champions. The Dec. 13-14 event at Bushy Park will include drivers from Formula 1, IndyCar, MotoGP, Le Mans, NASCAR, World RallyCross and Touring Cars. SST founder and owner Robby Gordon will compete in the event for the second time – his first coming in 2001.

About Stadium Super Trucks

Influenced by the former Mickey Thompson Stadium Off-Road Racing Series, where drivers such as Gordon, Casey Mears and six-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson got their start, Gordon created SST in response to the public’s overwhelming interest in trucks and off-road racing. His plan to re-launch the former stadium series has led to exciting racing on both asphalt and dirt, while producing one of the most extreme forms of action sports today.

Other than the trucks launching 20 feet in the air covering distances more than 150 feet, what sets the SST program apart from other series is the fact that all the SST trucks are identically prepared and delivered to drivers in race-ready condition. Race winners are decided by driver skill rather than individual team engineering and budgets. Drivers and their personal mechanics are assigned specific SST technicians who together tune and make minor adjustments to the 600-horsepower trucks.

Menards At The Brickyard Formula Off-Road Presented By Traxxas To Bring Off-Road Truck Racing To Famed IMS

Menards At The Brickyard Formula Off-Road Presented By Traxxas To Bring Off-Road Truck Racing To Famed IMS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 19, 2014) – One of the greatest achievements in the history of off-road racing will occur on Friday, May 23 when the Formula Off-Road Presented by TRAXXAS series competes on the world’s most famous race track – the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Menards at the Brickyard Formula Off-Road by TRAXXAS race will take place on Coors Light Carb Day in conjunction with Indianapolis 500 Race Weekend. The Stadium Super Trucks will race on a modified course on the front straight of the famed 2.5-mile oval and a portion of the infield road course.

“Coors Light Carb Day is a fan favorite at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway because it combines racing and other entertainment in one afternoon and the addition of the TRAXXAS series to our schedule provides further excitement during the day,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “The Stadium Super Trucks race often with the Verizon IndyCar Series and produce an incredibly exciting style of racing everywhere they run and we look forward to seeing them put on a show at IMS.”

The Formula Off-Road Presented by Traxxas series features identically prepared trucks, which are made to resemble their scaled-down TRAXXAS radio-control-car counterparts. Like their TRAXXAS namesake, the trucks are designed to take flight and withstand aggressive driving, however, unlike RC trucks, they produce 600 horsepower generating speeds greater than 130 miles per hour.

The opportunity to race at the Brickyard will also mark the third time in 2014 the TRAXXAS series will race with the Verizon IndyCar Series, and marks the return of series-founder Robby Gordon to competition at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“My first trip to Indy as a competitor was in 1993 driving for A.J. Foyt,” said Gordon, who is a 10-time Indianapolis 500 competitor and a 12-time Brickyard 400 driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Indianapolis.  “I grew up watching Rick Mears, A.J. and others race at the Speedway and dreamed of driving there, but I never imagined we would race off-road trucks at Indy.  I have a lot of great memories from Indianapolis and this will be another one added to the list.”

The Menards at the Brickyard Formula Off-Road by TRAXXAS race on Coors Light Carb Day will be broadcast on NBCSN June 13 at midnight EDT. The schedule for Coors Light Carb Day is:

Friday, May 23 – Coors Light Carb Day

11 a.m.            Verizon IndyCar Series Practice
12:30 p.m.       Indy Lights Freedom 100 Race
2 p.m.              Tag Heuer Pit Stop Competition
3:15 p.m.         Menards at the Brickyard Formula Off-Road by Traxxas Practice
3:30 p.m.         Coors Light Carb Day Concert with Sammy Hagar and the Wabos and Sublime With Rome
4:40 p.m.         Menards at the Brickyard Formula Off-Road by TRAXXAS Race

The Stadium Super Trucks that will race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will hit man-made ramps at more than 100 mph at multiple locations throughout the circuit hurling drivers nearly 20 feet in the air and 150 feet down course.  The series was created to bring the excitement of Baja-style desert racing to large crowds of race fans.

The first rounds of the 2014 Formula Off-Road Presented by TRAXXAS series were held at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix and the Long Beach Grand Prix.  Both events have produced incredible racing in front of nearly 100,000 fans at each venue.

The franchise format created for the Stadium Super Trucks makes business sense for drivers and marketers given that they don’t have to outspend other teams to be competitive.  Each week the series builds, maintains and delivers race-ready trucks to competitors, which eliminates start-up costs and day-to-day overhead of running a team.  A driver’s focus is on winning races and delivering for their sponsors. All of which is ultimately a benefit to fans.

The 98th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race is scheduled for Sunday, May 25.

NBC Sports and Formula Off-Road Presented by Traxxas Team Up For 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 14, 2014) – NBC Sports Network will broadcast eight SPEED Energy Formula Off-Road Presented by Traxxas races in 2014. Time slots for the eight hours of programming were selected and focused on the powerful millennial-generation demographic with all races airing in primetime on the west coast of the United States due to the immense popularity of off-road racing in the Central and Pacific time zones.

Additionally, ESPN will showcase the trucks live during X Games Austin on June 8.

Formula Off-Road Presented by Traxxas will begin its second season of competition March 28-30 at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in conjunction with the IndyCar Series. The trucks will race five times with IndyCar in 2014 at a number of the series’ most popular venues including St. Petersburg, Long Beach, Indianapolis, Detroit and Toronto. Stand-alone Formula Off-Road Presented by Traxxas events will take place at Orange County, California’s Sand Sport Super Show, the Coronado Speed Festival in San Diego and along the Las Vegas Strip while the mega-SEMA show is in town in November.

The Stadium Super Trucks that race in the series will hit huge man-made ramps at more than 100 mph at multiple locations throughout each of the circuits hurling drivers nearly 20 feet in the air and 150 feet down course. Robby Gordon created the series to bring the excitement of Baja-style desert racing to large crowds of race fans and with a revamped and expanded schedule for 2014 the Series expects to race in front of more than 750,000 fans in addition to its television audience.

The series features identically prepared trucks which are made to resemble their scaled-down Traxxas radio-control-car counterparts. Like their Traxxas namesake, the trucks are designed to take flight. However, unlike RC trucks, they produce 600 horsepower generating speeds upwards of 130 miles per hour.

Justin Lofton Wins Stadium SUPER Trucks Round #2 at Long Beach

Long Beach, Calif. (April 23, 2013) – In a dominating performance, Justin Lofton overcame a practice mishap on Saturday by another driver to be the class of the field on Sunday on the way to winning his first ever SST race in the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Grand Prix of Long Beach.

As near perfect weather conditions blanketed Long Beach, Calif., the highly anticipated Round #2 of SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks took to the temporary constructed asphalt street course of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The starting line-up for the 10-lap SST Final would be determined by a complete invert of qualifying times in practice from Sunday morning. At the conclusion of the 20-minute practice session, Justin Lofton navigated through the 11 turns and over the four jumps of the 1.968 mi course the quickest of the 12 competitors with a blistering lap of 1:47:775. Nearly, two seconds faster than second place, Jeff Ward with a 1:49:615.

As the green flag flew in front of jam packed grandstands, Nick Baumgartner and Greg Adler paced the field with Baumgartner jumping out to an early lead. The trucks of Justin Lofton, Robby Gordon, and Rob MacCachren wasted no time moving to the front passing truck after truck. Trouble found Justin Matney on Lap-2 as he spun backwards going over one of the jumps causing trucks to scramble every which way. Adler took the worst of the damage as he retired from the race on Lap-3 with transmission issues.

A restart on Lap-4 bunched the field back up, but that did not hinder leader Lofton in the Weekend Warriors Productions Yokohama truck as he went right back to work where he left off hitting all his marks on the tricky course to pull away from second place. The action behind Lofton became heated as trucks were beating and banging into each other battling for position.

Justin Lofton would go on to secure his name in the record books as SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks winner of the Grand Prix of Long Beach followed by second place finisher Robby Gordon and points leader Rob MacCachren rounding out the podium.

After the race Lofton commented on winning Stadium SUPER Trucks Round #2:

“I’m super stoked to capture my first Stadium SUPER Trucks win. The outcome from Round #1 at Phoenix was disappointing, but to come out here today and put on such a dominating performance racing through the complete field is simply just awesome.”

“Hats off to my crew and the SST crew for getting the truck back together after being rolled 7 times the day before by a fellow driver. The safety and engineering of these trucks is something truly amazing. Robby did a fantastic job! I appreciate the Grand Prix of Long Beach for giving us the opportunity to race in front of all these fans. I hope we are invited to come back next year.” Stated Lofton.

The Inaugural season of SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks continues Saturday night, April 27, in Los Angeles, Calif. at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a full slate of Stadium SUPER Trucks, Monster Trucks, SUPER Buggy, and SUPER Trophy Kart racing.

SST Championship Trophy to be Named After Mickey Thompson

Charlotte, N.C. (April 15, 2013) – Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD officials are honored to announce that the 2013 SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Champion will be the recipient of the Inaugural Mickey Thompson Championship Trophy, named in honor of the late championship racer, innovator, and promoter, Mickey Thompson.

Born December 7, 1928, in San Fernando, Calif., Thompson was an integral player in the West Coast drag-racing scene of the 1950’s. His most notable achievement during this time was the creation of the first slingshot dragster in 1954.

However, it was during Mickey’s time managing the Lion Drag Strip near Long Beach, Calif., he created some of the most innovative improvements in racing safety. The development of the ‘Christmas Tree’ starting lights that are implemented throughout drag racing today, took the human starter out of the equation. During the same period, it was Mickey’s idea to fill barrels with water to help absorb a car’s energy during a crash; the same safety technique is now used in Stadium SUPER Trucks competition years later.

As a championship driver, Thompson set more speed and endurance records than any other driver in automotive history. A 2007 Automobile Quarterly article estimated that Thompson participated in more than 10,000 races, drove more than 1 million race miles, and set nearly 500 speed and endurance records, including 295 records at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

Though it was his love for off-road racing that led Thompson to found SCORE International in 1973, a sanctioning body to oversee endurance off-road racing throughout North America. Thompson continuously said that the only ones to enjoy this form of magnificent racing were “Nothing but cactus, and jackrabbits.” He wanted to bring the excitement of desert racing to a wider audience.

In 1979, Mickey and wife Trudy formed Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group (MTEG) an indoor motocross and off-road vehicle racing show and competition. The goal was to take the sport from back-country terrain to stadiums in heavily populated metropolitan areas. Beginning with the first stadium event at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, MTEG was able to bring off-road racing to the masses, giving city fans a taste of the ultra competitive racing throughout the Baja 1000.

As a competitor and innovator, Thompson lived his life in the fast lane and gained thousands of fans and admirers. His memory continues to inspire drivers and promoters around the world today. As it most recently inspired Orange, Calif., native Robby Gordon, in the rebirth of Mickey’s vision bringing back off-road racing to city fans in stadiums around North America. In 2013, those visions became reality as Stadium SUPER Trucks Inaugural event was held on April 6 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

Stadium SUPER Trucks Founder and President Robby Gordon stated;

“There was no other name more fitting for the Stadium SUPER Trucks Championship Trophy than to name it in honor of the late Mickey Thompson. What we are doing was Mickey’s vision back in the day of bringing off-road to the masses, people are able enjoy a fun night of racing and entertainment while being in some of the finest facilities throughout North America.”

The winner of the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Championship will hold possession of the Mickey Thompson Championship Trophy for exactly one year. At that point it will be returned to series officials to award to the following years champion.
