Matt Mingay Wins Stadium SUPER Trucks Sydney 500 Finale at Sydney Olympic Park

Homebush, New South Wales (December 6, 2015)- Famed Australian stunt man and SST driver Matt Mingay captured his second Stadium SUPER Trucks Presented by TRAXXAS victory of 2015 on Sunday morning in the SST TRAXXAS trucks finale of the Sydney 500 on the temporary Sydney Olympic Park temporary street circuit in Homebush, New South Wales, Aus.

Mingay, a resident of Gold Coast, Queensland, Aus., drove his No. 2 Hot Wheels/ Castrol EDGE-sponsored truck to the front of the pack dodging bumping and banging trucks in front of him. Rob Whyte would get into the TRAXXAS truck of Scottsdale Ariz., driver P.J. Jones on Lap-2 allowing Mingay to get by into the second position behind early leader United Fiber & Data driver Matt Brabham from Gold Coast, Queensland, Aus.

A restart would set up a sprint for the finish as Brabham, Mingay, and 2015 SST Champion Sheldon Creed would go 3-wide for position down the extra wide back straight going into the corner. As the three would bump into each other not giving any ground Mingay would nab the lead, followed by Creed, shuffling Brabham back to the third position after been stuck on the outside.

As Creed looked inside Mingay for the lead going side by side over the TRAXXAS jump, the red flag was displayed as Nazareth, Penn., driver Bill Hynes would roll over his United Fiber and Data truck placing it on its side in the middle of the racing surface. Hynes would exit the truck unhurt, but the time limit of the event would expire cutting the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Presented by TRAXXAS final event of the 2015 season short 2 laps.

Mingay would be declared the winner, followed by Creed in the second position, and Brabham rounding out the podium.

Jones would be credited in the fourth position in his TRAXXAS truck, as LIVE / Think Loud Entertainment driver Scotty Steele from Peoria, Ariz., would recover from a rough start to the weekend to finish the race in the fifth position. Norwell, Queensland, Aus., driver Paul Morris in his SuperCheapAuto / Hungry Jacks truck would drive a conservative race capturing the sixth position.

South Australian driver’s Brad Gallard and Greg Gartner were credited with the seventh position and eighth positions respectively after both had contact early and lost valuable groud on the lead pack.

Hynes, would be recorded in the ninth position after his roll over troubles through the chicane. Gold Coast, Queenland, Aus., driver Rob Whyte’s race was ended early after his Just Car Insurance / Motul Oil TRAXXAS truck made heavy contact with the outside tire barrier.

SPEED Energy/ Toyo Tires driver Robby Gordon of Orange, Calif., would continue with more bad luck as a motor would expire on in early in the race event crediting him with the eleventh position.

Sheldon Creed would capture the overall win for the weekend with the lowest average between all three races with his two wins and second place finish, Second was claimed by Norwell, Queensland, Aus., driver Paul Morris in his SuperCheapAuto.com truck, and the overall podium was completed by race 3 winner Matt Mingay.

SST Champion Sheldon Creed To Race In The 2016 Dakar Rally

Charlotte, NC (December 15, 2015) – Robby Gordon and Team SPEED are returning to compete in the 2016 Dakar Rally in full force with Two super car HST Gordini’s contending for the overall win. Gordon will drive his familiar bright orange #312 SPEED Energy/Toyo Tires/ TRAXXAS entry; while 2015 Stadium SUPER Trucks Champion, and X Games Gold Medalist Sheldon Creed, joins the team and will be the youngest competitor into a Dakar Rally piloting a similar looking #337 SPEED Energy/ Toyo Tires Gordini.

Both race vehicles will rely solely on Toyo Open Country tires to deliver the maximum Off-Road performance, and durability needed to tackle the 13-day challenge; 5,739-mile (9,237 KM) through the extreme terrain of Argentina and Bolivia.

Gordon, a Dakar fan favorite is no stranger to the event making 2016 his 12th start. Since the first in 2005, Gordon has gone on to capture 12 stage victories, with five top 15 overall finishes. By capturing the overall third place podium in 2009, Gordon became the first American in the history of the Dakar to capture a stage win and overall podium finish, even as a manufacture.

Joining Gordon in the cockpit of the SPEED Energy/Toyo Tires/Traxxas Gordini will be previous 3-time Dakar navigator, and veteran Baja co-pilot, Kellon Walch.

“Kellon has been very involved in all our test sessions throughout 2015 as well as the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. The in-car communication and mechanical skills between the both of us is some of the best I have ever had for the Dakar.” stated Gordon.

For the first time since 2012, Team SPEED will enter an additional racecar in the Rally with 2015 Stadium SUPER Trucks Champion and X-Games Gold Medalist, Sheldon Creed making his first Dakar start.

Creed, who will be recorded as the youngest competitor in the 36-year history of the world famous rally will join veteran Dakar competitor Robby Gordon and Team SPEED to drive the vehicle that captured the final special of 2015 with sponsor support from SPEED Energy and Toyo Tires.

“Being a teammate with Robby for Dakar is an absolute dream come true. I’ve gotten to know him super well over the last few years, and I have seen how much hard work he puts into his Dakar program. Out of all drivers that I could have the chance to be teammates with, this is a true honor to be able to learn and test my driving skills against some of the best in the world under the watchful eye of a Dakar great,” Creed said.

As a Southern California short-course off-road racing phenom Creed boasts an impressive racing resume for an 18-year old, capturing 12 previous off-road championships, and staking claim to a season record 11-SST victories in 2015, including taking home the 2015 X-Games gold medal.

“When looking at drivers for the second HST Gordini we did not have to look very far as ultra talented 2015 Stadium SUPER Trucks Champion and X Games Gold Medalist Sheldon Creed is super familiar with the vehicle size and handling. My biggest challenge with Sheldon will not be going fast, but will be holding the reins back on him to make the vehicle last 13-days. The first half of the race he is a driver, but a student up against some of the best Rally racers in the world.”

Jonah Street, a motorcycle veteran whom has competed in six prior editions of the Dakar (2006-2012), will try his hand at navigating for the first time sitting along side of Creed.

“I think Sheldon is really talented, so getting to work with him in his first trip to Dakar is going to be awesome. I have watched him race this past year and he looks great!” Street commented in regards to competing with Sheldon.

Beginning on January 2nd in Buenos Aires, Argentina competitors will gather in front of hundreds of thousands fans for opening ceremonies, along with a short qualifying stage that will set the starting positions for the following day. From Buenos Aires competitors will be led West on narrow gravel roads and paths through forests and fields into the extreme elevations of the Andes Mountains North into Bolivia where competitors will be turned around, and head back South to Salta, Argentina then East to the finish in Rosario on January 16th.

Robby Gordon Greeted Enthusiastically at Dakar Rally Preliminaries, Claims 25th in Mini-Section Prologue for Stage 1

ROSARIO, Argentina (January 2, 2016) – A massive crowd of thousands of enthusiastic fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite drivers, and riders stood outside Saturday’s mandatory race briefing and opening ceremony for the 37th Dakar Rally, prior to the hundreds of competitors partaking in the timed mini-section from Buenos Aires to Rosario. Based on their the finishing times in the prologue drivers and riders will be lined up in logical starting order for Sunday’s Stage 1 of the 2016 Rally.

While all were properly recognized by the large crowd, it was the United States’ Robby Gordon, celebrating his birthday, who was completely surrounded by adoring fans as they let it be known who the Dakar Rally’s clear fan favorite is. After the feel-good exit from the race briefing where Gordon and teammate 2015 Stadium SUPER Trucks Champion Sheldon Creed were surrounded by thousands, Team SPEED made their way to Saturday’s opening ceremonies outside Argentina’s presidential palace Casa Rosada, as fans wished competitors good luck prior to the start of the days 11 km timed mini-section to Rosario.

The short prologue, which saw all competitors compete in a time-special, saw Robby Gordon finish 25 seconds off the leader Bernhard Ten Brinke’s pace in the 25th position, while Dakar rookie Sheldon Creed would round out his prologue effort out in the 38th position, 1 minute behind the leader respectively. It is noted after 64 drivers took the green in the special a Mini-competitor in the car division lost control and went into the crowd during his prologue effort forcing ASO officials to cancel the rest of the short special.

With the preliminaries and prologue complete, Team SPEED, is spending the final hours making preparations for Sunday’s first special from Rosario to Villa Carlos (Stage No. 1), where Gordon and Creed will be two of most watched competitors in the car division.

The first stage on Sunday will include 662 kilometers with 258 km (160.3 miles) of those featuring hard racing before an overnight break at the first full bivouac at Villa Carlos Paz. The circuit follows the heart of the Argentinean countryside with fast, sharp turns that will divide up the field on day one in a showcase of driver skill. All teams that complete the stage will work on their race vehicles overnight and line up again for Monday’s second stage in the order in which they finished the first leg of the Rally.

Villa Carlos Paz lies on the western slope of the Sierras Chicas and its population of 56,000 will be a stark contrast to the more than three million people that teams encountered in the Metropolitan limits of Buenos Aires. While the lakeside tourist town may be smaller, its crowds should be just as enthusiastic when the vehicles and their support teams begin arriving Monday afternoon.

While the 2016 Dakar Rally will not be won on Sunday, it will become immediately clear who the contenders for the championship will be and will also likely eliminate some of this year’s top competitors.

Special Sections: 258 km
Total: 662 km

Argentina is a country of mountains, in all forms. Although the first stage is not yet at altitude, the summits are well and truly visible. The wheels of the vehicles follow sinewy and undulating tracks, with the exception of the first, faster, part of the special section. A partial separation of the categories will ensure dangerous overtaking is avoided.

Stage 1 Of The 2016 Dakar Rally Cancelled Due To Bad Weather

VILLAS CARLOS PAZ, Argentina (January 3, 2016) – American teammates Robby Gordon and Sheldon Creed will need to wait until Monday morning to begin their attempt at the 38th Annual Dakar Rally, as rally organizers cancelled the first special Sunday morning from Rosario to Villa Carlos Paz due to treacherous heavy rains and low lying clouds throughout the area.

Due to the extreme weather conditions all aircraft would remain grounded along the racecourse, making it impossible for ASO officials to guarantee the proper safety of competitors.

Once the stage was officially cancelled for the day Gordon and Creed were sent on there way down the rained soaked racecourse and highway under transit section rules to safely insure their No. 312 and No. 337 SPEED Energy/ Toyo Tires/ TRAXXAS HST Gordini Supercar’s would make it to the evenings bivouac in Villa Carlos Paz.

Gordon, who was scheduled to start 25th in Sunday’s cancelled first stage, will roll off the line in the same position for Monday’s marathon stage to Termas De Rio Hondo, while first time Dakar competitor Sheldon Creed will start in the 38th position.

Deemed to be the longest and trickiest special of the 2016 Rally, an initial link section of 70 km (43.5 mi) long will take the competitors to the start of the second special. With nearly 510 km’s (317 mi) of racing on an ultra fast course both HST Gordini’s will unleash showing the 109 competitors in the car class their first initial threat, making up extensive ground to the frontrunners.

Stage 2: Villa Carlos Paz – Termas De Rio Hondo

Cars-Trucks
Special Sections: 521 km (323.7 mi)
Total: 858 km (533.1 mi)

The statistics speak for themselves: with around 800 kilometers to cover depending on the category, the day will be very long. There is a significant distance to cover in both the special and the liaison sections: although the terrain presents no real difficulties, the relatively fast tracks may already benefit those who love hills and crossing rivers and who can keep up high speeds over the whole distance. Cars and trucks entitled to an extension on this day.

Sheldon Creed Wins the Round No. 3 of Stadium Super Trucks at Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, Australia

ADELAIDE, South Australia (March 6, 2016) – 2015 SST Champion Sheldon Creed captured his second SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks Presented by TRAXXAS win of the 2016 season in convincing fashion Sunday in the finale of the Toyo Tires SST Clipsal 500 on the temporary street circuit in Victoria Park Adelaide in front of a announced crowd of 83,000 Australian motorsports fans.

Creed, a native of Alpine, Calif., driving his No.1 TRAXXAS-sponsored truck and Orange, Calif. driver Robby Gordon in the Arctic Cat/ Toyo Tires No. 7 entered the race one and two overall in the weekend point standings. Meaning the two ultra competitive drivers would put on a show starting the 8-lap event from the last row.

From the drop of the green flag the weekend struggles for Australian stuntman turned racer continued, as Matt Mingay would start from the first position after crashing his Hot Wheels/ Castrol EDGE backed truck hard on Saturday afternoon. Mingay would lead the first lap but quickly surrendered the lead position to Los Angeles, Calif. racer Burt Jenner. Lap-3 would see Mingay tangle with Aberglasslyn, New South Whales driver Toby Price spinning Mingay parallel on the front stretch ramp causing all drivers to scatter from hitting him.

The charge to the front by Creed and Gordon would take full force on Lap-2 moving through the field passing truck after truck ultimately dodging the spinning carnage in front.

The Lap-5 restart would see Creed work his way past leader Price, and never look back as Gordon and Creed would break away from the rest of the pack three wheeling and putting on a driving performance for the ages maneuvering their 600-horsepower TRAXXAS trucks around the track much to the delight of the ecstatic crowd.

Gordon would close the gap on Creed the final two laps, but would run out of time as the 18-year old off-road standout would go on to win his 15th Stadium SUPER Trucks race of his young career.

Matt Brabham driving the United Fiber & Data/ LIVE/ Think Loud Development No. 83 would start in the ninth position and would quietly work his way through the chaos to finish in the third spot.

TRAXXAS racer Keegan Kincaid of Crandon, Wisc., would cross the finish line in fourth position behind Brabham after spinning early in the event and having to work his way back through the pack.

Saturday’s winner Burt Jenner would go on to finish fifth in his SPEED Energy/ Toyo Tires No. 50 after leading four laps and tangling with a fellow driver on Lap-6 falling back, Jenner would be followed to the finish by Penola, South Australia Off-Road racer Greg Gartner in the R&D Batteries/ Delkor Calcium Battery/ Fuchs No. 500 who would finish sixth.

Sixth place starter Toby Price of Aberglasslyn, New South Whales would work his way to the second position behind Jenner on Lap-6 before contact with fellow Australian Matt Mingay would spin the both of them. Price would be credited with the seventh position, while Mingay’s horrific weekend would continue with him finishing in the eighth spot.

Paul Morris from Norwell, Queensland driving the SuperCheap Auto truck finished ninth, while Nazareth, Penn. driver Bill Hynes piloting the No. 57 United Fiber & Data / LIVE/ Think Loud Development truck rounded out the top ten.

Santee, Calif. driver Robbie Pierce in the Royal Purple Synthetic Oil No. 30 ran a great first four lap’s before getting turned around on the final lap and loosing valuable ground to the lead group ultimately crossing the finish line in the eleventh position.

First time SST driver Travis Milburn of Adelaide, South Australia would encounter troubles on Lap-4 bringing the No. 25 Move Yourself Trailer & Ute Hire to the pit lane falling out of the event.

The overall standings over the three races would see Sheldon Creed first, with Robby Gordon claiming second, and Matt Brabham rounding out the top three.

The SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Presented by TRAXXAS will continue with Rounds No. 4 & 5 next weekend March 11 & 12 at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in St. Petersburg, Fla. Tickets to the race are available through the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg web site at www.gpstpete.com/.
